5 ways to go the extra mile for your guests

Part of a fabulous wedding is thinking about the experience your guests will have. I like to have couples walk themselves through how their guests will experience the wedding day. From entrance to exit.

#1 How to Go The Extra Mile for Your Guests: Shower Them With Flowers

Flowers make people feel loved, honored and well cared for.

You can shower your guests with flowers in a variety of ways:

1. Corsages for the extra-special women.

2. Boutonnieres for the extra-special men.

3. Beautiful flowers on the table while your guests dine. This could come in the form of a garland, cluster of bud vases or luxurious centerpieces.

4. Wow them with lush and romantic backdrops. This could come in the form of floral arches, floral walls and extra-lush arrangements placed at the bar, the welcome table and wherever else guests will be spending time. You could also give them an opportunity to have their picture taken with some of the florals.

Corsages are an inexpensive way to honor your guests and make them feel extra special.

#2 How to Go The Extra Mile for Your Guests: Write a personal note to each guest.

We all know how it feels to travel to a wedding and then barely get to see the couple. And let’s face it, you’re going to be busy! It’s unlikely you will get to spend as much time as you like with each of your guests.

That’s why I love this simple act of writing an individual note to each guest.

I received a note from my step brother on his wedding day and I’m still thinking about it many years later.

If you plan ahead, you can pull this off in relatively little time. Plan to write a few notes per day so that you’re all finished by your wedding day. In addition, this note can serve as a marker for your assigned seats.

What a fabulous exercise in practicing gratitude. You will generate so many warm, loving and positive emotions in regards to each of your guests that you will be overflowing with joy.

And joy is the place where you need to be spending most of your wedding day!

I gave the idea of the personal note to Nicole and Garrett who were married in July of 2022 at The Salted Roots Cabins in Seward, AK.

#3 How to Go The Extra Mile for Your Guests: Give toasts to your guests of honor.

Everyone likes to be recognized. This is such a lovely and traditional way to call people out, and recognize them.

Think of 3-5 people you and your spouse could recognize and write a quick 30 - 60 second toast to each.

If you’re shy about speaking up in front of a crowd of people (like I was at my wedding), practice before-hand, know it’s OK to feel nervous and don’t be afraid to use notes.

#4 How to Go The Extra Mile for Your Guests: Make a point to look each guest in the eye at least once and give them a hug or warm handshake.

Your wedding is not only for you and your spouse. That’s what elopements are for!

Make time in your wedding schedule to connect one on one with each guest, even if it’s just for a few minutes each.

If you have a longer guest list, you could make this happen by organizing a receiving line, or scheduling in a time to visit each person during dinner.

Another idea I love is setting up a small table behind the bride and groom with two chairs. Folks can be invited to visit this table and spend some one-on-one time with the bride and groom.

#5 How to Go The Extra Mile for Your Guests: Write Thank-You notes.

There’s nothing better than a hand-written thank you note mailed to someone’s door a week after they attended your wedding.

Give yourself a deadline for this, so you don’t forget. Then set aside 30 minutes per day until it’s completed.

Make sure you put this task in your calendar or planner so you know it will get done.

If you take a few of these ideas and implement them, your guests will leave your wedding feel loved, cherished and full of warmth.

July Wedding at Raven Glacier Lodge in Girdwood

A beautiful and intimate venue for your Alaskan wedding is the Raven Glacier Lodge in Gridwood, AK.

Just a short and stunning drive from Anchorage is the picturesque ski town of Girdwood, AK.

Girdwood is home to a few impressive wedding venues including the Raven Glacier Lodge.

I’m always thrilled when I get to design flowers for this magical space. For this mid July wedding, the couple chose soft and bright pinks to really pop in the sheltered forest surroundings.

Peonies were the perfect flower to create exactly what they were looking for. Lush, fragrant and luxurious, peonies are the quintessential wedding flower. And with this wedding date lining up perfectly with Alaskan peony harvest, I was delighted.

What type of weddings are best for Raven Glacier Lodge?

Smaller weddings. Wedding sizes of 75 or less do great here. (Don’t quote me on this, please check with the lodge owner) From my recollection, weddings that I’ve designed for here have around 30 - 80 guests.

Simple weddings. If you want ease of planning, Raven Glacier Lodge is fabulous as they do all your food in house. There’s lodging inside for the couple and a limited about of wedding guests. Lots of other lodging is available close by, so your guests will have quick travels to and from. Although, it’s always better to book early in order to secure rooms for everyone.

Intimate weddings. Due to the towering sitka spruce and hemlock forest, and the homey lodge interior, Raven Glacier Lodge has a cozy feel. Your guests can stroll the surrounding forested paths, walk down to the babbling creek or hang out by the fire pit. Cherished conversations and connections among your guests are sure to blossom here.

The arch at Raven Glacier Lodge is a classic garden-style shape. It can be moved to wherever you’d like to have your ceremony. Most couples choose to have their ceremony near the reflecting pool. It offers a serene backdrop for your event and numerous possibilities for photos.

The arch I sent our for this couple was pre-made at my Anchorage studio. The couple delegated “flower fairies” from their wedding group to attach it. This is a lower cost option for folks that want a floral arch but want to save on delivery and set up fees.

Depending on the weather, you may need to ask guests to bring layers. I’ve set up for multiple weddings here where the air was chilly. But being in the presence of the forest is well worth the temperatures.

The bar area is tucked under the porch and stairs. And the stair descent offers a dramatic entry for the just married couple.

The dance floor is at the base of the stairs. It is a nice size for any number of dancers.

A large percentage of my wedding clients are planning an Alaskan destination wedding.

Often the couple has a family tie to Alaska or it’s been on their traveling wish list and they are using their wedding as a reason to travel here.

Seasonal Flowers for a July Wedding in Alaska

July is a fantastic time to take advantage of the many seasonal Alaskan flowers available for your wedding.

Here’s an idea of what you can expect if you’re planning a wedding in Alaska in July and are requesting Alaskan flowers for your wedding.

In Alaska, early July offers plenty of spring blooms like ranunculus, peonies and stock. I was also able to pop some lavender campanula into this bright and cheery bridal bouquet.

Alyeska Resort offers so much for a top notch Alaskan wedding. It offers ease of planning due to all the in-house amenities like catering and lodging. And it offers amazing photo opportunities from the deep and cool temperate rainforest to the wild mountainside just a short tram ride away.

By late July, the flower fields are bursting with blooms. If you are looking for local flowers for your wedding planning for a late-July through early-September wedding is the absolute best.

By mid-July, you can see all the variety that is available in this Gardenwild Floral/Turnstone Farm bouquet. The Alaskan flower fields are just about to start their peak production of seasonal flowers.

June Wedding in Alaska: What to expect

What Local, Alaskan flowers are available for your June wedding?

It is my absolute joy to work with local Alaskan flowers both from my urban farm right here in Anchorage, and from other farmers in the Matanuska Valley and the Kenai Peninsula.

Here is a brief list of what may be available for your June wedding: tulips (early), peonies (late), ranunculus, columbine and stock.

June is still considered spring in Alaska, so please know that depending on our winter snowpack and spring weather we may have more or less than what’s listed above.

Honestly, flower variety is limited in June. But your wedding can still be amazing floral-wise. If there is not enough variety locally, I can order from other farmers in Washington, Oregon and California.

Below are all examples of flowers that may be available for your June wedding.

What’s the weather like in June in Alaska?

While we all hope your wedding day is the most magical day possible, weather can be unpredictable.

The last few summers have been warm and dry in the early part of our summer. But be prepared for hot sun or cool rain. If we are to get thunderstorms, they usually occur in the month of June.

If you or your guests are traveling, please pack layers for warmth. Can you find a shawl to wear over your dress? Can guests pack a light jacket if your event is outdoors?

What are the best wedding venues in Alaska?

While there is no best wedding venue, there are so many amazing ones.

I’d pick a location that best represents the feeling you most desire. Mountain resort, seaside cottage, river lodge, city hotel or forest hideaway. Alaska has them all!

A mountain elopement is doable in July, just be prepared for hiking through snow. Seaside or sailboat elopements could be perfect this time of year.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst:

The most majestic locations in Alaska can be made challenging by relentless mosquitos. Don’t overlook this when planning your wedding. Offer screened-in areas and natural bug repellents if you’re getting married during mosquito season ( roughly late-May through mid-August).

Here are a couple of natural bug repellents I love: All Terrain Herbal Armor, Murphy’s Naturals, Natrapel, Off Botanicals and Greenways Organic to name a few. You could order a few of these and have them handy for your guests to use.

In June, be prepared for unrelenting sun. The sun in Alaska can feel extra intense due to its lower angle in the sky.

I recommend that folks have adequate shade just in case there is a hot spell, especially for those that are more sensitive to heat. Don’t forget your sun bock if you’re outdoors.

Keep your flowers out of the sun, unless you’re actively taking photos. If your arch flowers or other floral installations are sitting in the sun, have a spray bottle and mist them periodically with water.

The couple below lucked out with their weather on the top of Mt. Alyeska. When I delivered flowers for this couple at the Alyeska Hotel the wind and rain was intense.

The clouds lifted and the rain thankfully let up for their ceremony. Just to cover their bases, they had a back up plan in place for their ceremony and umbrellas for the guests.

Wildfire smoke can be a bummer. Wildfires can happen any time during the summer.

Most of our state is covered in dense forests and smoke can travel hundreds of miles in any direction. Every handful of years we will get a major smoke event in the area. Be aware that this could occur. Have a back up plan for individuals that are sensitive or elderly.

If there’s smoke near your venue, have masks on hand for those that are more sensitive and/or be prepared to move your event indoors.

By the off chance that there is a wildfire near your venue, be alert to local weather and travel information. Occasionally traffic can be stalled or blocked if a wildfire is in the area.

This is not meant to scare you! I just want you to be aware so you are not surprised or caught off guard. If you prepare your mind ahead of time, nothing will ruffle you.

Now that you know what to expect, you can prepare for and envision your perfect day. Because no matter what happens, your day will be perfect. You got this!

Micro-wedding at The Salted Roots Cabins in Seward, Alaska

Nicole and Garrett were wed at the beach adjacent to Salted Roots Cabins in Seward, Alaska.

I had the great pleasure to create florals for their special day.

Nicole wanted a lush, partial arch with a white to rust ombre tone. The end of July is the perfect time for Alaskan flowers. Peonies are still fresh and beautiful. And dahlias are just beginning to bloom.

Look closely and you will see the lovely “Dreamcatcher” dahlia, along with a very cool carnation. I know carnations have a bad reputation, but some of the more modern colors are truly amazing.

Eucalyptus and magnolia greenery, although not from Alaska, is beautiful, sturdy and versatile. I love how the rust undersides shade perfectly with the orange-peach dahlias.

And look how rain, or ocean mist, can make your wedding flowers even more gorgeous.

The Salted Roots Cabins is a picturesque location just outside Seward, Alaska. They have beautiful modern cabins to rent out for the bridal party and guests.

The front area can be covered in a tent and set up for a reception and ceremony.

Across the road from the cabins, is the beach. This is another lovely locale for a ceremony. Nicole and Garrett chose to have their ceremony there.

Weddings here are small (around 50 guests) and intimate.

It is the perfect place to get ready for a wedding, alongside your most beloved attendants.

Going the extra mile for your wedding guests

Nicole and Garrett wanted to do something a little extra special for their guests.

At my step brother’s wedding, the couple hand wrote letters to each guest expressing their gratitude to each person and how much they meant to them.

I shared this idea with them and they loved.

Here you can see the son of the groom reading his handwritten and personal note. This is so touching.

I know each guest always wants more time and more connection with the couple. This is a fabulous way to give your guests that extra care and attention.

Her appointment-only boutique has been around for 9 years and occupies a cozy 1947 era home in the Spenard neighborhood of Anchorage, Alaska.

Tara loves looking for quality, integrity and story when shopping for designers to add to their bridal dress collection. 

She strives to create a shopping environment that is thoughtful in price points and has gorgeous options for all body types.

What does the dress shopping or dress buying experience look like inside Bateau Bridal Boutique? 

Bateau Bridal Boutique offers private appointment-only service. Tara wants to give you a personalized experience. 

You get to pick the music you want to listen to and then she’ll encourage you to talk about what you’re looking for in a dress and your overall vision for yourself as a bride. 

If you know you need a dress but are not quite sure what you’re looking for, Tara and her thoughtful staff can help. After serving brides for over 9 years, she knows all the right questions to ask in order to help you find exactly what you want. 

Once you’ve settled on a few dress options to try, you’ll be invited to try on the dresses privately and then come out to display yourself to your guests and Tara’s staff.

It’s always fun to dress shop with friends and family but she recommends inviting a max of 3 or 4 others to come shopping with you. This way you keep it intimate and personal and don’t get overwhelmed by too many opinions.

How do you recommend someone find the perfect wedding dress? 

Tara says that for most people, once they put on their dream dress they just can’t stop smiling and they don’t want to take it off. Once this happens, you’ve found the one.

When I went shopping for my wedding dress, after trying on what seemed to be countless dresses I wondered, how do I know when I’ve found the one? 

My aunt gave me this advice: once you put on your wedding dress, you’ll just know. You will feel so amazing and happy. 

She says that a lot of brides want to take off dresses pretty quickly. If, on the other hand, you find yourself lingering in a dress and not wanting to take it off, you may have just found the one. 

Go into dress shopping with an open mind. You may think you want one thing but actually fall in love with a different style. 

This totally happened to me. I had envisioned a modest and simple looking gown but ended up falling in love with a Vera Wang gown with layers and layers of frilly tulle. It was nothing I had envisioned.

Once on, I couldn’t stop smiling. I has found the one!

Tara says to give yourself a lot of time so you’re not rushed. 

And once you have found the one, be happy and move on. Decision fatigue can be real. So have your own back after each wedding decision. Make a choice and be done!

Ok, you’ve found the wedding dress of your dreams. Now what?

Once you’ve found your dream dress it’s time to special order it in your ideal size. Unless of course you happen to buy off the rack - meaning they have your style and size in stock.  

Most likely, even when ordering your ideal size, you will need to get it tailored in order for it to fit perfectly.

Tara is able to refer to local tailors who can expertly alter your gown once you’ve found the one.

What do bridal gowns cost?

Bateau Bridal Boutique offers plenty of dresses right off the rack for under 1,000.00. 

More than half their inventory is under 2500.00 and otherwise range from 1,500.00 to 4,000.00.

Some of the brides I work with shop outside of Alaska for dresses. Why should they come to you instead? 

Tara said that in the past, people had the mindset that they have to leave AK to find something new and different. 

She wants people to know that they may be able to find the same dress in her store. 

Tara and her staff travel outside to go to market in order to get the most fashion forward gowns.

She wants brides to know that they don’t have to travel to find a dress. You really don't have to fly out of state. You can shop locally for dresses, accessories and tailoring.

When should brides start shopping for a wedding dress?

Make sure to shop for your dress 9-12 months in advance.

You want to make sure you can order in the one you want if need be.

You’ll want to start tailoring your dress 8 weeks before your event.

Do you have any general dress do’s and don’ts to share with people?

Tara thinks the biggest thing to remember is to be happy with your body the way it is. If your weight goes up or down a tailor can fix the dress. 

Buy a dress that fits you now. It can always be altered again later. 

And here’s my own funny dress sizing story: I was sized for my dress in a midwest heat wave with temps around 100 degrees. I then came back to Alaska to get married on a particularly cold July day that was in the 50’s.

That’s a big temperature difference!

Unfortunately for me it meant my dress was almost falling off during the wedding. Little did I know that my body tends to swell in the heat. In retrospect a tailoring appointment a few days before the wedding, in Alaska, would have been ideal.

She agrees that getting sized in the right climate is important.

As a final thought, Tara wants every woman (of every size and shape) to feel good and beautiful. 

I love this. Because truly, we are exactly who we are supposed to be. We shouldn't be smaller or bigger, shorter or taller. 

Being ourselves is our biggest gift to the world. If I see you feeling beautiful in your body, it will inspire me to feel beautiful as well.

Best Wedding Venues in Girdwood, Alaska

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places in the world. That’s why it is one of the best places to find an amazing wedding venue.

Aside from a longish airplane ride, Alaska it is relatively easy to get to. Once here, the wilds of the Alaskan wilderness are at your fingertips.

Anchorage, our major city, is only a short drive from so many potential jaw-dropping Alaskan wedding venues and elopement locales.

Here I’d like to highlight two wedding venues in the cozy resort town of Girdwood, Alaska that get you worlds away from the hustle bustle and into the remote-feeling wilds of Alaska.

Weddings Venues in Girdwood, Alaska

Girdwood is a very popular wedding destination for locals and out-of-towners. It is a 45-60 minute drive from Anchorage and is situated at the base of our largest downhill ski resort.

It’s a resort town so there are many Airbnb and hotel options for guests. That said, it is a small community, so booking early is always recommended.

Weddings at The Alyeska Resort

A fabulous location for a larger and more formal wedding would be the Alyeska Resort.

Folks often take a tram ride to the top with their guests and hold their ceremony on the mountaintop overlooking the Chugach Mountain range, Turnagain Arm and the cozy, woodsy town of Girdwood.

Receptions can be held inside the hotel at the base of the mountain in one of the banquet halls. It is formal, classy and absolutely gorgeous.

In-house catering is available, which makes that part of your planning a breeze.

A tram-ride makes the mountains completely accessible to guests that may have a harder time getting around.

Weddings at Raven Glacier Lodge

If you’re planning a smaller wedding and want a cozier feel you must book the Raven Glacier Lodge. It is a classic Alaskan establishment.

You can host around 50 guests, outdoors, under their magical porch. Kathy, the owner, and her team cater your meal. All you have to do is bring the guests, flowers (book a call with me for that HERE), music and a planner if you desire.

I’ve created florals here on many occasions and I can say weddings here are pure magic.

One of my favorite things about weddings in Girdwood is that the coast is a short distance away. You can definitely schedule time to grab some breathtaking photos on the rocky and rugged beach of Turnagain Arm.

Fall Wedding In Girdwood, Alaska at Raven Glacier Lodge

A fall wedding is always pure magic.

It is one of the best times to get married in Alaska if you are wanting an abundant supply of Alaskan grown flowers.

Danielle and Paul got married at Raven Glacier Lodge, which is one of my absolute favorite venues in Alaska.

Raven Glacier Lodge is a short drive from Anchorage, Alaska, where all your guests will fly into, yet it feels so remote and quiet.

Any wedding along the Turnagain Arm gets the added benefit of gorgeous, rugged and stunning photo ops.

For Danielle and Paul, I cut one of the largest and most stunning dahlias in my garden. I am always amazed at how one flower can create so much abundance.

I loved the arch I made for Danielle and Paul’s ceremony right next to the Raven Glacier Lodge reflecting pool.

When I create wedding florals I get to pull all sorts of unique flowers and foliage from the garden.

A few extra-special ones in the arch were trailing nasturtiums, nigella pods and spruce boughs.

An early-September Alaskan wedding always gets lots of dahlias.

MaryAlice Beauty - Interview with an Anchorage hair and makeup artist.

I first met MaryAlice in a photoshoot I organized for my business, Turnstone Farm. 

After my last shoot I learned a lot: get a haircut the day before, hire a professional to do my makeup. 

Because, seriously it is quite possible that you will break out the day of your photoshoot, wedding or other special event. Plan ahead!

After working with MaryAlice, I knew I wanted to work with her again and refer all my clients to her.

How long has she been in business?

MaryAlice has been in business doing hair and makeup for over 10 years. She’s always had a passion for it and has completely fallen in love with the power of the beauty industry.

How long does it take to get someone ready (do their hair and makeup)?

Set up can vary based on the type of wedding.

Elopements are more relaxed and can take less prep time depending on the look.

For large wedding parties, she often starts at 7:00 or 7:30 am to make sure the whole wedding party has time to be prepped.

Even without a big wedding party, couples often do first looks which can take an hour and a half of time with a photographer. So it’s best to plan for plenty of time to get ready.

Does she have any advice to couples getting married?

MaryAlice wants to encourage you to get really clear about the vision for your wedding. In fact she offers Creative Strategy Sessions for couples wishing to nail down their dream vision.

She’s noticed that the people who are the clearest about their vision are the happiest. MaryAlice’s interdisciplinary career has given her opportunity to build a lot of skill as a creative problem solver.

As a start, ask yourself why - why are we doing this? How do we want people to experience this? There is no right or wrong answer. It’s just important to be clear. With clarity, all the decisions you need to make will become easier.

What exactly is a Creative Strategy Session?

It’s a conversation without a custom end goal for each person. It’s a process of guiding and reflecting back the vision that is emerging and being heard to create clarity for everyone involved. It’s finding patterns in your thoughts. It’s finding your why for your event and most importantly creating space for what you actually want. 

Having a guide to help you figure out what you want can be incredibly powerful.

MaryAlice loves weddings because they are already a creative endeavor. Artful gatherings, traditions, logistics and a ton of emotional meaning are always involved in weddings. Design sprints. Creative process. Disguised in different names: sprints, accelerators. Merge the two to support people creating their vision. Helping people have a creative vision who can bring that together. Having a crystal clear vision. There’s a thousand different ways they can go.

People start booking around December for summer weddings. Each wedding party gets a custom quote for pricing as it varies depending on time, size of groups and desired looks.

I have my own story about why to outsource makeup and hair! But I wanted to know in her words… why should someone hire MaryAlice and not just DIY it?

Makeup is such a felt sense, wearing it's a sensory experience.

A professional can use makeup to transform you into many different moods. If the tool is not used in a way that supports your desired feeling, it can become an experience that doesn’t honor your goal. It’s really all about an experience.

Hiring a professional can also create a buffer between relationships. If your best friend offers to do your makeup, yes this may save you money but if you are not happy with the end result or the process it may create added relational tension. No one wants this added stress on their wedding day.

MaryAlice has heard so many stories of this happening and it makes sense to give yourself clear boundaries with important wedding details. 

You tie things to people and you want to enjoy each moment and boundaries are a great way to keep it uncomplicated. There is so much psychology in the art of beauty. 

She strongly recommends doing a trial run for folks that aren’t used to wearing makeup. It can feel weird, whether you’re wearing fake lashes for the first time or just putting on a thin layer of lip gloss. Everyone has a different comfort level for makeup.

To some people it can feel dramatic like putting on a costume. The most important thing is making sure you feel comfortable with your choices so that you don’t have extra discomfort during an already energetically charged social situation. 

I always like hearing about other wedding vendors. What vendors does she like working with?

MaryAlice loves Lauren Roberts and Megan Freeman for videography and photography.

As for planners, she says there are so many great options. We both agreed that communication style and personality really matters when hiring a planner. If you have the chance to interview a few by all means do it!

On another note, MaryAlice gets excited when people find ways to use more small businesses for the in-between experiences/gatherings that happen around weddings. 

Is there a way to incorporate some of our favorite small businesses into your special day or weekend?

Like Wild Scoops, Fire Island Bakeshop, Cynosure Brewing (or any other brewery in town). The Spa at Alyeska, etc. Get creative!

There are so many options for creating fun and new experiences for friends, family and guests who visit Alaska to be a part of your day.

I love giving my clients cool ways to wow their guests, and transform their event.

Is there a story that stands out in her mind of a couple going above and beyond?

She loves when families personalize their weddings. One couple canned their family’s smoked salmon and gave it to guests. Those small personal touches make events so special.

She remembers one of her first wedding experiences as a teenager of attending a beautiful pre-reception night. It was an elegant backyard party an evening before her cousin’s wedding. 

Most of the guests were invited to this casual and classy dinner. People told stories about their relationships with the bride and groom and gave toasts. 

An event like this makes the actual wedding day so much more cohesive. People have already had the chance to meet and to put each other in context. This allows everyone to feel more involved in the many different connections. 

It also gives your most beloved people the chance for friendships and new relationships to spark. What an awesome gift.

I wanted to know what one goal MaryAlice has for her business this year or next?

She says she is really excited to launch her new website.

And as always, she is excited to do more weddings. MaryAlice loves being a part of weddings. She likes being a part of intimate moments and joy while helping people feel their best.

At a wedding you are part of a collaboration and that group energy is contagious. She gets super energized with all the love that is shared and learning about families and how all the relationships were born.  

It can be such an intimate experience with people. She loves hearing stories and hearing about all the different ways people come together in life.

I wanted to know the one thing MaryAlice wants her soon to be clients to know?

MaryAlice likes to make people feel comfortable being seen in these special moments.

Salted Roots: A Favorite Micro-wedding Venue in Seward, AK

I was thrilled to speak with Kelly Ann, co-owner of Salted Roots Cabins recently.

If you’re not familiar with Salted Roots, it is a collection of cabins just outside Seward. Kelly Ann says it feels truly remote without actually being remote - it is easily accessed by road from the town of Seward, AK. 

They opened their doors in 2020 right when COVID was starting to shut things down. What a wild time to open a business! Yes, Kelly Ann said, “bad luck to say the least”.

But whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger, right?! Thankfully, they were able to count on lots of local Alaskan visitors to keep their lights on.

I know for me, 2020 was a very busy year of booking local cabins and camping out.

In late July of this year I drove down to Salted Roots to set up for a micro-wedding. Micro-weddings are perfect for this venue as the cabins sleep a total of 20 people and a guest count of up to 50 is allowed. 

It felt cozy, intimate, and magical. Having access to the beach was enchanting and completely romantic.

Couples wanting to reserve this space for weddings need to be booking ahead by about a year and a half. 

They require booking out all 4 cabins, plus an event fee. This guarantees you’ll have the place just for you and your guests on your wedding day (or days).

If you are looking for additional accommodations for your guests, Kelly Ann can give you a list of neighboring properties that have lodging. There are many!

Booking out all the cabins gives you the entire property to use including a gravel beach-front ceremony space, parking, space for 20x20 event tents and a sauna.

When booking, 50% of the total is due at time of booking. On Jan 1st of the event year, you will owe the remainder of your booking fee. 

Highlights that Kelly Ann wants you to know about? Their over-the-top European-style wet-room-bathroom and kitchen. Sounds luxurious, doesn’t it?

The couple brings inspiration to their cabin designs from extensive travels they’ve done across the US.

After seeing these cabins in person I cannot wait to book a personal winter retreat here!

Future Plans for Salted Roots.

Looking to the future Kelly Ann and her co-owner husband Matt have lots of plans. They’re converting an old German bus into another fun and beautiful sleeping space. 

In addition, they are developing an indoor event space (because you never know with Alaska weather!) and a commercial kitchen. 

After taking over the Flamingo Lounge in downtown Seward, they hope to offer catering for their guests' weddings. They are super excited to blend the two businesses.

Until then, they highly recommend getting food trucks for fun wedding food.

I love this idea. For my stepbrother’s wedding they hosted a night-before-dinner (sort of like a groom’s dinner) with a local food truck. It was super fun, delicious and memorable!

What wedding couples absolutely love Salted Roots?

Kelly Ann thinks it’s the creative couple who wants more of a DIY experience.

That said, if you don’t want to plan each and every detail she highly recommends going with a local planner or day-of coordinator. True North Events and Wild Hearts Events are two that Kelly Ann would recommend.

I wanted to know from Kelly Ann what was one thing she wanted guests to know most about her venue. 

She said, “It’s a work in progress. We’re on phase one right now. Phase two and three will bring a commercial kitchen with an indoor event space. The space is best for DIY couples. Salted Root provides the canvas for couples to make it what they want. It is personal, dynamic, unique, and flexible.”

Advice from a Wedding Pro.

Now that I’m in the wedding industry I love thinking back to my own wedding.

It was lovely and there are a lot of things I would probably do differently today. After all I am a slightly different person than I was back in 2012.

I was curious what Kelly Ann had to say about this.

Did she have one big mistake she would re-do to make her past wedding even better?

Yes, there was one thing. While she said her wedding was “pretty much 5-stars”, she does wish she had booked an extra night at her lodging venue post-wedding. She says having one more night just for the newlyweds would have been amazing, rejuvenating and much appreciated.

She wants couples to know that there can be a bit of a come-down after all the build up and excitement of the wedding day. Having an extra day of self-care can transform the transition into your new marriage.

In addition, here’s something we both have come to realize: while a wedding feels like it’s just for the couple, it is really an event you are putting on for all your most beloved.

You are the host and planner. Keep in mind that you are creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you are bringing all your favorite people together to celebrate.

How many opportunities do we really get to bring all these people together? What a blessing!

What is a floral installation? Wedding Floral Pieces Defined

This blog is to help define all the wedding flower terms out there. So when you hop on a call with me or another florist you know exactly what we’re talking about.

A la Carte Wedding:

Florists throw around this term often. It usually refers to a couple who chooses to order their flowers piece by piece and not as part of a package.

In my floral design business, most of my weddings are completely custom and thus a la carte. I do not offer packages since each couple has unique desires for their florals.

When talking to your florist, ask them to define this for their particular business. There are no stupid questions!

Full Service Wedding:

This terms usually applies to someone who wants delivery, set up and take down for their wedding florals.

Folks who choose a full service option usually want centerpieces or tablescapes set up and ceremony flowers. That could include an arch, alter flowers and aisle flowers.

In my design business any couple can add on delivery, set up and take down for orders over 3,000.00.

Wedding flowers for less than that are picked up from my warehouse studio.

When talking to your florist, ask them to define this for their particular business.

The Bridal Bouquet:

This is arguably the most important wedding flower piece. The bridal bouquet is held by the bride in pre-ceremony pictures and of course accompanies the bride down the aisle.

I do want to emphasize that not only a bride can carry the bridal bouquet. Groom’s Bouquet anyone? And of course in a queer wedding, there can be one, two, or none of these gorgeous flower pieces to adorn part of the couple.

In fact, I think we need a new name for this piece. Shall I suggest “Wedding Bouquet”?

Wedding Party Bouquet (AKA Bridesmaids Bouquet):

The bouquet that anyone in the wedding party chooses to carry for the wedding ceremony.

Usually the women carry these. But increasingly, anyone on either side of the couple can carry a bouquet.

Boutonniere:

A small cluster of flowers and foliage designed to be pinned to the coat of a man in the wedding party.

Who gets a boutonniere? Usually any significant man in the couple’s life: fathers, sons, brothers, grandfathers, and men in the bridal party.

Gender is not a qualifier for a boutonniere! Feel free to break the rules here.

Corsage (pin-on):

Often couples choose to honor their mothers or other significant female figures in their life with a pin-on corsage.

These tend to be larger and slightly more elaborate than a traditional boutonniere.

Corsage (wrist):

A similar idea to the above but made to be worn on the wrist. I’ve seen women in a bridal party wear these in lieu of a bouquet.

Wrist corsages can be a bit more elaborate then pin-ons.

Who gets a corsage? The answer is there are no hard rules here but usually I see couples get them for their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and sisters.

Again, this can be for any significant woman figure they want to honor.

Altar Flowers:

Flower arrangements that are placed at the altar or the place where the couple is to exchange vows.

Altar flowers can be arrangements in low or elevated vases. They can be placed on the floor or set up on pillars or other structures.

Altar flowers can also include installations and arches and anything else you can imagine fo accompany you or to give you an amazing backdrop while you exchange vows.

Aisle Flowers:

Flowers to adorn the chairs, or benches along the aisle leading to the altar.

Flowers and foliage can also run the length of the aisle in a garland type of arrangement.

Arch Flowers:

Often couples want a backdrop to their wedding ceremony.

Arches make your ceremony extra special and provide a stunning addition to any of your bride and groom pictures and ceremony pictures. These can be simple and small or elaborate and full.

Floral Installation:

The word “installation” encompasses many different elaborate arrangements: floral chandeliers, any sort of hanging floral piece, arches, floral walls, your imagination is the limit here!

Installations are most commonly used as a backdrop for the ceremony or at the reception.

Chuppah:

The chuppah is a four posted canopy covered with cloth for a Jewish wedding. Flowers usually adorn the front and can be almost any size.

Mandap:

A traditional four posted canopy for a Sikh wedding, covered with cloth and traditionally adorned with 4 floral arrangements, one on each of the four posts.

A centerpiece for a sweetheart table or anywhere else you might want a pop of flowers.

Centerpiece:

Any floral arrangement to decorate the reception tables.

These can vary greatly by size or style but they usually are placed on every table in your reception area.

Bar Arrangement:

The bar is a highly used place at your wedding reception!

Couples often choose to dress it up with a larger floral arrangement.

Welcome Arrangement:

When guests enter your reception area or wedding space there is often a welcome table with photos, cards, gifts, table numbers, guest lists and a more elaborate floral arrangement.

Sweetheart Table Arrangement:

If the couple is choosing to dine at a sweetheart table you’ll need some decoration for your table-for-two. This can be small to large. Simple to elaborate.

Head Table Arrangement:

If you and your wedding party are dining together at a head table, you’ll need to decide how to decorate.

You can choose almost any style of floral piece for this table.

Garland:

Foliage bundled together and spanning the length of a table. These are usually used on longer, rectangle tables. They can also flow over the end and toward the floor.

Garlands are traditionally just foliage but having a sprinkling of loose flowers in them is also beautiful.

Tablescapes:

This is a loose term to define anything to decorate your reception tables.

Tablescapes can include: candles, bud vase groupings, garland, loose flowers, loose foliage and small or larger vase arrangements.

Couples can also choose to add fruit, stones, shells, fabric runners, or anything else that they can imagine being beautiful.

The Exact Questions I ask my Clients and Why

Taking the first step to explore wedding flowers means hopping on the phone with me. Don’t worry! While this is my job and I want to make sales, my main goal is to determine if you and I can work together well.

If so we can go to the next step (yay!).

In our initial free phone call I want to get to know you and what you care about. I am not here to sell! I am simply here to listen and take in all our dreams and challenges in planning your special day.

So to give a little snapshot of what we’ll talk about, here is a list of 10 questions I may ask you. If you don’t have all these figured out yet, don’t worry! I am here to help. It’s my job after all!

1) How did you two meet?

I love hearing about how a couple met. It gives me a snapshot in time of one of the most beautiful moments in your relationship. These stories stick in my head for a long time and it makes me feel like I really know you (even though we just met).

2) Tell me a little about you two.

This is an open ended question I ask in my initial inquiry on my website. Although it is not required I usually get an answer.

Folks talk about where they’re from, what they do for work, what they like to do together. They talk about their pets or kids. And again, it helps me get to know you right away!

3) How do you want your guests to feel?

This is my favorite question. And honestly it is a question I wish I would have asked myself when planning my wedding.

It’s important to remember that while this is your wedding and the start to your marriage your guests are there to support you and celebrate in the creation of a couple. Remember to honor them. Remember to set the stage for an intentional feeling. This could be “loved”, “honored”, “welcomed”, “enchanted”, etc.

I challenge you to do a little brainstorming here! And then let that feeling guide you as you plan every detail.

4) What kind of floral pieces do you want?

Floral pieces include the following: bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, corsages (pin-on or wrist), boutonniere, ceremony flowers and reception flowers.

If you’re unsure what some these mean or which ones you “need”, don’t worry - we can talk through all this on the phone!

5) What is your floral color palette?

Usually folks have colors in mind based on bridal party attire, favorite colors, seasonal colors or some amazing inspiration photos you’ve found.

Sometimes folks don’t have a color palette and just want me to use what is beautiful and in season. I can work with almost anything! And I can help you narrow your color ideas into something you love.

6) What is your budget?

Most customers have a wedding flower budget of between 10% and 20% of their total wedding cost.

More often than not, couples have no idea what flowers cost, thus don’t really know what their budget is. And not surprisingly! This is after all, probably your first time planning a wedding.

I can do two things here - I can tell you what you can get with your desired spend amount OR I can give you a proposal based on your desired floral pieces and vision.

7) Who are your other vendors?

I have a few vendors I love working with. And I’m always learning about more!

If you don’t have a certain vendor booked yet I am happy to refer some of my absolute favorites.

The vendors you choose also give me a little more info about your style and overall vision.

Oh wait, what is a vendor?? Venue, chapel, caterer, photographer, videographer, hair stylist, make-up artist, musician, DJ, etc.

8) Do you have any questions for me?

I always save a few minutes for you to ask me anything!

I’ve designed for dozens of weddings and have planned my own wedding. Plus, I’m a flower farmer! It’s safe to say that I know flowers. I also am obsessed with kindness, connection and love. I want you and your guests to get the absolute most out of your wedding day.

Alaskan Sailboat Elopement

Alaska is a premier destination for couples wishing to elope.

Pristine mountain vistas, gorgeous backdrops of woods or tundra and water - lots of it.

This couple chose to embark on a sailboat adventure with a Turnstone Farm bouquet in hand.

And although I’d like to say that the weather they had is typical, you really never know what you’ll get. These folks completely lucked out with a gorgeous day on a sailboat with Resurrection Bay Sailing charters.

In late June the flower garden at Turnstone Farm is just beginning to open up into bloom. I chose these exquisite, delicate columbine, dried black albion pods, dark purple anemones to add some interest. Alaskan Grown peonies and dark, moody carnations set the foundation for this big and full bouquet.

10 Things to do between Anchorage and Seward, Alaska

The tiny town of Seward, Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula have amazing wedding venues.

Most guests coming into Alaska travel through Anchorage. If your guests are looking for fun things to do on the way to your wedding, I’ve come up with a list of 10 amazing things to do in between Anchorage and Seward.

My list is organized from North to South.

So let’s get right to it:

1) Grab delicious focaccia and scones from Alder & Birch. I used to be a professional baker, so I’m very particular about my baked good. These guys do an amazing job on both their focaccia and scones. You will not be disappointed!

2) Stop by Girdwood Brewing for a beer and some great eats. There’s always a food truck parked out front and on a sunny day you can bask in the sun on the beer patio. This is located in the town of Girdwood.

3) Take a picnic to Portage Lake. There is so much to do in Portage Valley (just south of Girdwood). The next few adventures listed will give you an idea of other things to do here.

4) Hike the Trail of Blue Ice in the Portage Valley. Read all about it here: https://www.alaska.org/detail/trail-of-blue-ice

5) Check out the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center located right on the shores of Portage Lake.

6) Detour to Whittier via the road to Portage. Drive through a mountain tunnel and pop out as a seaside village full of awesome vistas! The tunnel pass is 13.00 round trip (as of 2022) and cars are allowed to drive through every 30 minutes. If folks want to visit longer, you can charter boats that can take you into the famous Prince William Sound. There are kayak rentals and jet ski rentals as well here.

7) Detour to the quaint town of Hope, Alaska. You can poke around the tiny town or take a couple of great hikes. One takes you from the campground out toward Gull Rock. 8) Grab an ice cream at Summit Lake Lodge. The lodge is situated on a beautiful lake.

10) Visit the Sea Life Center in Seward! You can check out all sorts of Alaskan Marine animals here. If you’re traveling with kids, they will be thrilled!

5 Things to Consider When Planning your Wedding Flowers

Wedding planning can be A LOT!

Especially since for most of us mortals, the biggest thing we've organized is a dinner party.

Just the sheer number of decisions to make can be daunting.

So just to get you prepped for ONE (but one very important) part of your wedding, YOUR FLOWERS, here's a few things to start mulling over in order to get exactly what you want.

And while you're thinking these things through, remember that YOUR FLOWERS WILL BE MEMORIALIZED IN YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS FOREVER!

It is for this reason that while the experience of your wedding is so important. People remember what you do and how you make them feel…

Your attire and flowers are right up at the top of the list for importance.

So here are 5 things to consider when planning your wedding flowers.

1) Size.

Size does matter! But it's all dependent on what you want.

Big, small - YOU decide! Sometimes size can match your body size but mostly I tell people just to go with what feels good.

Do you want your flowers to make a statement? Go bigger.

Do you like small and dainty? Go smaller.

Do you want to communicate abundance? Go bigger.

2) Shape.

Cascade, upright, vertical, loose, tight. What kind of shape do you like?

Hop on google and peek around - get a sense of what you like! If you're looking for trends, here's what's hot right now: loose, wild-flower like, slightly cascading, or vertically sprawling (and I'm loving it). But honestly, you don't need to give a crap about what other people like. This is YOUR FREAKING wedding.

Elizabeth wanted a large and wild-flower like bouquet. Most of my large bouquets can be held in such a way as to create a slight draping cascade.

3) Color.

Often when folks come to me, they have already decided on a color palate. I just match my seasonal blooms with their attire and other decorations. But if you're not sure yet, peek around on Google. See what you like. Ask yourself why you like something.

Color can be fun!

Let it be fun!

And after designing and seeing hundreds of wedding photos, the most colorful bouquets look the best in photographs.

Fun fact: I used to be scared of color. As an artist, I felt like there were just too many options.

That's why I've always loved black and white photography and printmaking. You can keep it simple!

But since flowers came into my life it's fair to say that I"m color-obsessed. If you're stuck on color - I'm here to help.

4) Varieties.

Here’s what I would recommend - be open to having lots of different varieties in you floral designs! Roses and carnations don't have to be boring. Wildflowers don't have to be boho. But they can be!

I say if you're obsessed with a variety and it's in season let's make it happen! But if not, there are so many amazing flowers.

I want to fill your bouquet and arrangements with as many varieties as possible. Because you know what's in right now? Texture. How do you get texture? Lots of variety!

5) Floral pieces.

Maybe I should have started with this one. But I think deciding what you need to have is so dependent on the following.

What do you want your wedding to FEEL like?

What is most important to you?

These answers may help guide your decision as to whether you need a full floral arch or want to give bouquets to the moms (which is an idea I honestly LOVE - as a mom, I will be a joyful, tearful mess if I get a bouquet from my kids on their wedding day).

For Rosalyn, the most important floral pieces were her bridal bouquet and her full floral arch.

Magical Wedding at Raven Glacier Lodge with Rosalyn & Tyler

I had the pleasure to design dreamy and magical wedding flowers this past summer at the lovely Raven Glacier Lodge.

If you haven’t experienced this amazing place, let me just say that I expected woodland fairies to pop out from behind every tree.

Raven Glacier Lodge is a mystical and enchanting place.

Weddings here are intimate and are sheltered amongst the towering hemlocks and spruce of a temperate rainforest.

A rushing creek populates the background, giving folks a sense of calm and quiet peacefulness.

Rosalyn & Tyler wanted to express a wildness in their florals. Ultimately, after seeing their photos I saw also saw magic, romance, and enchantment.

Rosalyn’s most important pieces were her full arch and bridal bouquet.

I love a woman who values herself!

We debated the single flower bouquets. Rosalyn was worried they might look small but instead evoke modest luxury. Each bridesmaid holds a single stem Cafe au Lait dahlia (with a couple of stems of filler and foliage) straight from the Turnstone Farm field.

I like couples to think about what is really important to them on their wedding day. Priorities are important to identify and own.

This is a big day, and although there are many reasons for having a wedding, staying true to your vision is a must.

Rosalyn made it clear that a full arch was a non-negotiable.

The flowers I chose for this wedding were straight from the Turnstone Farm field (dahlias, snapdragons, anemones, and ranunculus) and bought in from other American Grown farmers.

August weddings are perfect for Alaskan-grown flowers. The fields are usually flush with all sorts of variety.

This particular summer was a more traditional summer - cooler and cloudier. My anemones bloomed almost all season (they are usually considered a spring-blooming flower) and my second planting of ranunculus did amazing.

Girdwood Wedding at Raven Glacier Lodge with Rebekah & Chaz

One of my all time favorite venues for weddings is the Raven Glacier Lodge in Girdwood, Alaska.

It is nestled among towering evergreens. It is a magical place. My assistant last year, said she expected fairies to jump out at every turn. Yep - that’s how it feels!

In addition to it's magical setting Raven Glacier Lodge has an infamous host and owner.

Kathy is not on social media, doesn’t seem to have a webpage and is quite the challenge to get a hold of. Every bride I talk to gives a big sigh and says how hard it is to try to track her down!

But, let me tell you - it is totally worth the struggle. As far as I know, there are not too many venues of this nature in the close proximity to Anchorage: small, cozy, pure magic, the perfect micro-wedding destination.

I had the great pleasure to create florals at this venue a couple of times in 2021. Here is one of those weddings!

Rebekah and Chaz wanted fall colors for their flowers.

I incorporated lots of greenery for a slightly loose and wild look. Bright rusty-orange and burgundy dahlias were the stars of this wedding.
